Parts of a Final Drive

While comprised of few parts, the final drive is one of the most important pieces of any tracked machine. Without it, your machine isn't going to make it very far. But what parts go into a final drive and what do they do?

Parts of a Final Drive

  1. Hydraulic motor
  2. Gear reduction assembly
  3. Hydraulic lines (feed and return)
  4. Shaft
  5. Sun gear
  6. Planetary gears
  7. Ring gear
  8. Sprocket

A final drive has two major components: a hydraulic motor and a gear reduction assembly. Hydraulic lines, sometimes up to five, deliver hydraulic oil into and out of the hydraulic portion of the final drive. Be sure not to mix up the feed and return lines, which can come in various sizes. Some models have extra ports on the side for a two-speed setup. The rotating shaft in the hydraulic motor turns the sun gear, which drives the planetary gears that turn the ring gear. This causes the sprocket bolted to the outside to rotate, moving your machine.
