Caterpillar D6 Dozer at CONEXPO 2023

There are a lot of moving parts on the common bulldozer. It is key to make sure the machine is maintained on schedule so that there is not excess wear and tear on the machine and it's parts, so that the machine will continue to move dirt like it did when it was brand new. There are many common questions that are asked on how and when to maintain a bulldozer, but have no fear, we will try and answer them here.

Maintenance Schedules

While every machine is different, the good rule of thumb is as follows:

  1. Daily: Check engine debris, check connections in the engine filter, and check the engine oil and hydraulic fluid reservoir levels.
  2. Every 500 hours: Replace the fuel filter cartridge, change the engine oil pan, and check the radiator and oil cooler fans.
  3. Every 1,000 hours: Check the fan belt tension level, look for any ROPS bolts that may be coming loose from machine vibration, and examine the turbocharger tightening parts.
  4. Every 2,000 hours: Clean the turbocharger, check the vibration damper and adjust the engine valve clearance.
  5. Every 4,000 hours: Check the water pump.

Other Recommended Maintenance

  1. Check track tension: Soft surfaces like sand and snow put tension on the tracks. Clean the tracks to remove debris from the grooves. Follow the manufacturer’s guidelines for track tension.
  2. Check the electrical system: Inspect batteries, wires and connections, and insure that old and damaged components are replaced. This will help prevent short circuits.
  3. Look for damaged components: Look at the ripper carriage, shanks, teeth and cylinders for signs of wear, like cracks. Be sure not to let damaged parts wait for replacement, which could lead to those parts damaging others and increasing the repair bill.

To keep your bulldozer in good condition, regular maintenance is key. Daily general checkups on key areas will allow you to find issues and act quickly. Following these guidelines will help ensure that your bulldozer continues to perform at its best.
