Dealing with Springtime Mud on Excavator Tracks

Warmer weather means it's time to dig, but in the springtime, projects are slowed down by mud.

Mud clogs trenching buckets, sticks to the tracks and wheels, making a difficult job for operators even more challenging.

The best way to get out of the mud is to not get stuck in the first place. This can be done by marking areas where machines will likely get stuck. Include this in the pre-operation inspection of the work area for hazards. Mark off areas where excavators and other machines could get stuck.

The wider the track, the better your tracked machines will be able to move over muddy ground. Wide track shoes increase traction and grip while reducing ground pressure.

There's no way to completely prevent mud from collecting on your tracks. As a result, time will be required to knock mud off periodically during operation, and completely clean off the mud at the end of the day. A power washer, shovel or steel rod, and a dedicated worker will be needed.

You can get a lot of mud off from right inside the cab. Put the bucket down over the side, lift the opposite track off the ground, and rotate the track. A lot of mud will fall off on its own.

Mud can really cause a headache when using attachments. Muddy material gathers on the edges of the attachments, making them difficult to use.

Applying something like grease or oil on the surface of the attachment can help keep the mud off but can be time consuming as more oil or grease needs to be applied.

When investing in attachments for your machine, consider if you will be working in mud. Many attachments are designed to reduce the amount of mud that can collect on the equipment.

Mud mats are a good way to keep your tracks out of the mud, and keep the machine from sinking. Mud mats are generally long slabs of sturdy planks of wood that can withstand the weight of the excavator. The operator moves them into position to provide support on sinking ground.

Be sure everyone knows when you are exiting your machine to clean mud off. Safety is paramount when working around any machine. Always shut the machine down if you get under the machine to clean off mud and dirt.
