The Longest and Deepest Tunnel in the World

A massive underwater tunnel is complete in China. Traffic travels more than six and a half miles under Lake Taihu in Eastern China's Jiangsu Province, which is about 50 kilometers east of Shanghai.

The tunnel, which started construction in January of 2018, cost just over $1.5 billion.

Officials say more than 2 million cubic meters of concrete were used to build the two-way tunnel, which has six lanes.

Colorful LED lights line the tunnel in an effort to prevent driver fatigue.

The tunnel is part of a 27 mile Changzhou-Wuxi Highway, which opened to the public a week ago.

The world's longest underway tunnel for vehicle traffic is Norway's 8.6 mile twin-road Ryfast tunnel.

The longest underwater tunnel for any form of human transportation is the Channel Tunnel between England and France.  Trains carry passengers 23 and a half miles under water.
