Unique Walking Bridge in Utah is Saving Lives

In 2018, after the loss of over 100 lives in a two year period, officials in Utah finally constructed a walking bridge over Interstate 80. Today, Utah officials say the walking bridge is a success.

Those deaths aren't humans, but animals. Officials say 122 deer, 13 moose, four elk, and three mountain lions were killed between 2016 and 2018.

The 13-mile stretch of I-80 was so dangerous for animal crossings the area became known as "Slaughter Row". It was considered one of the most dangerous stretch of highway for animal and drivers in the state.

Wildlife officials believed it would take years for wildlife to start using the bridge out of habit, however video evidence shows animals are already taking advantage of the safer route.

Three miles of fencing on both sides of the interstate helps herd the animals onto the bridge. The fencing was an earlier attempt to prevent animal crossings but deer, moose and the like would simply walk along the fence until reaching an opening.

Research determined the bridge should look a lot like natural habitat so the path is strewn with rocks, tree branches, and logs.

The next step to be taken with the walking bridge is a comprehensive study. Data collected will help the state determine how and where other bridges can be constructed in other high animal traffic areas.
