Skid Steer and CTL Joy Stick Styles

When it comes to skid steers and compact track loaders, or CTLs, there are different types of joystick set ups.  The type of joysticks you get depends mainly on your preference.  Machines can have all have hand controls or a combination of both, depending on if the operator's expertise and coordination.  Here's a look at the options.

Joystick Only

Joystick machines are controlled by, you guessed it, joysticks only.  Your left hand controls the direction of the machine, while the right controls the bucket functions.  There is a hand throttle on most machines along with a foot throttle.

Standard Control Levers

This set up controls the direction of the machine with levers.  Pushing both levers forward moves the machine in that direction, pulling them back moves the machine in reverse.  The action of pushing one lever forward and pulling one back will make the machine turn.  Foot pedals control the bucket with this setup.

Advanced Hand Controls

This option is a combination of both levers and joystick operations.  Everything can be controlled with the lever-joystick or, with the flip of a switch, the operator can lock the joystick and operator the bucket with foot pedals.  The movement of the machine remains all in the levers.

The option that is best for you completely depends on preference.  The environment you most often work in can make you lean towards one option over the. other.
