A main problem many Caterpillar engine owners run into is with the high pressure pump on HEUI engines better known as the HEUI pump. HEUI stands for Hydraulically Actuated Electronically Controlled Unit Injectors. The pump uses a hydraulic pump and engine oil to generate fuel injection pressure, and an ECM to control the pressure and amount of fuel injected into the cylinders.
Unfortunately, HEUI pump designs found on the 3126, C7 and C9 engines are flawed and fail much sooner than expected. After unsuccessful attempts to fix the issues, Caterpillar decided to stop rebuilding the pumps entirely instead.
