Home is Where the Heart is

If you're a homeowner, the value of your property has probably increased substantially over the past year. Housing prices are beefy, in large part, because the cost of materials are sky high.

In Coral Gables, Florida stands a small 2-bedroom, 2-bath single family home in which the owner was offered nearly a million dollars to sell - and declined the offer.

The home stands in the way of a $600 million commercial development - the largest in the city’s history. The homeowner, Orlando Capote, says his home means too much to him to sell.

"The house is my soul. Sell your soul for all the money in the world?" asked Capote.

Capote said when his father moved to Florida back in the 80s from Cuba, he worked long hours to save the money to buy the home for his family. His father died in 2005 and his mother passed away in 2020. Her dying request was that he not sell the property.

Over the course of six years, Orlando says he has received more than 60 offers to sell to from developers and has turned them all down. He says he even received an offer of $900,000 to sell the 1300 square foot home.

Developers aren't exactly rooting for Orlando, and the two sides are at odds over development with Capote claiming developers have violated city ordinances.

Capote said he is not going anywhere.
