Don't Buy a Used Engine, Get a Rebuilt Long Block!

We get a lot of calls from customers looking for used engines.  Once upon a time we did everything we could do to fill those requests.  After multiple bad experiences over the years, ConEquip Parts adopted a new policy and stopped selling used engines.  We won't even sell a used engine if the customer assumes all the risk with no warranty.  Why don't we do this?  Because we want the customer to get the type of engine he needs to get their machine running right again.

One of the better options we offer is a rebuilt long block.  A long block is a stripped down version of a complete engine.  While this may take longer to install because of all the extra work needed to get the engine ready for installation, experience tells us this is a more cost effective way to go.

Here are some of the problems our customers run into with a used engine.

First, there's often too much blow by once they get the engine installed.  They spend hours hooking everything up only to realize the engine just isn't going to work right.  Next, things simply don't line up right.  Even if the serial numbers match, the exhaust system may be set up differently, the injection system could be on the opposite side, or the oil pan may not fit.

Some customer think by having the exact same engine model will be enough so they will get an engine out of one type of a machine, such as a dozer, and try to install it in another type of machine, like an excavator.  This is a situation where customers are just begging for trouble.

It's obvious why a long block is a better option.  A long block is the entire block with all the internal components, such as the crankshaft, pistons, connecting rods, and camshaft all topped off with a loaded cylinder head.  Sometimes the long block will also come with an oil pan depending on the application.  A long block, however, will have no external components.  There will be no intake, exhaust, water pump, oil pumps, pulleys, starter, nor alternator.  Instead, the customer will reuse most of these parts off his original engine.

The process of getting the long block ready is as simple as putting the two engines side-by-side and start swapping over components.

Customers should also consider getting a new or rebuilt turbo, oil pump, and injection pump.  This will help with the longevity of the engine when it is complete.

Again, if you are considering a used engine, we urge you to look in the direction of a long block.  Our customers have spent too much time and money dealing with problems a used engine can, and usually will bring.
