Grease Gun Track Adjustement

Maintaining your hydraulic excavator’s tracks is essential for its performance, longevity, and safety. One of the most important aspects of track maintenance is ensuring that your track adjusters are properly set. Over time, tracks can become loose or too tight, affecting the machine's handling and efficiency. Adjusting the track tension is a quick task that you can do in under 10 minutes with just a few simple steps. Here’s a guide to get you back to work without delay.

Step-by-Step Guide to Adjust Your Track Adjusters

1. Prepare the Excavator

Park the excavator on a flat, stable surface. Turn off the engine and ensure the parking brake is engaged for safety. Elevate the side of the excavator you're working on using the boom and arm until the track is suspended just above the ground.

2. Locate the Track Adjuster

Find the track adjuster grease fitting, which is usually located near the idler wheel. This is where you'll either add or release grease to adjust the tension.

3. Check Track Tension

Measure the sag in the track by placing a straight edge over the track from the top of the carrier roller to the top of the idler. The track should have a specific amount of sag, typically around 2 inches for most excavators, as indicated in your equipment manual.

4. Increase Track Tension (If Loose)

Attach the grease gun to the fitting and pump grease into the adjuster. This pushes the idler wheel outward, tightening the track. Add grease slowly, checking the tension periodically by measuring the sag.

5. Decrease Track Tension (If Too Tight)

If the track is too tight, loosen the bleed valve on the adjuster cylinder to release grease. Monitor the grease release and stop once the desired sag is achieved. Tighten the bleed valve when done.

6. Final Check

Lower the excavator and move it back and forth a few feet to ensure the track is sitting properly. Recheck the sag to ensure it's within the recommended range.

Why Proper Track Tension Matters

Incorrect track tension can lead to premature wear on components such as the sprockets, idlers, and rollers. Loose tracks may derail, while overly tight tracks can strain your undercarriage. Adjusting your track tension regularly ensures smoother operation and maximizes the life of your machine’s tracks.
