From Struggle to Strength, A Life of Service and Redemption

Mark Duncan is the Season 8 winner of America's Hardest Worker. A youth pastor at Community United Methodist Church in Oldsmar, Florida, Mark was nominated by his wife of 12 years. Mark's story is an inspiration to everyone who has the privilege of knowing him. His early years were difficult. He grew up in a home surrounded by substance abuse, and his father was frequently in trouble with the law, affecting the entire family—especially Mark and his older brother. At a young age, Mark was introduced to drugs and alcohol, setting him on a dark path that eventually led to addiction. Despite these challenges, Mark was a gifted athlete. He excelled in football and wrestling and became a highly recruited high school football player, ultimately earning a scholarship to play football at a small college in Nebraska. Unfortunately, drugs and alcohol brought an end to his dream of playing college football, forcing him to return to Florida, where his struggle with substance abuse continued.

Eventually, Mark made the life-changing decision to get sober and joined a 12-step recovery program. It was there that he met another person working to rebuild her life—a woman named Christine. Together, they embraced sobriety, fell in love, and were married in 2014. Today, Mark openly shares his testimony of addiction, struggle, redemption, and the transformative power of his relationship with Jesus Christ. "I just want to be the light of the world and live the Sermon on the Mount," Mark says. Friends and coworkers describe Mark as someone who is always volunteering and giving his time to help others.

Mark has dedicated countless hours assisting communities recovering from hurricanes that swept through Florida and faithfully serves as a youth pastor, pouring into the lives of young people every day. His willingness to serve, encourage, and help others reflects the transformation he has experienced in his own life.
